A coalition of Syrian rebels led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) entered Damascus overnight on 7-8 December. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has fled the country for Russia. The fall of Assad will almost certainly weaken Iran, and undermine Russia’s regional standing. Iranian and Russian military assets have reportedly withdrawn from Syria, according to various media outlets.
